[This post is an entry in my upcoming devotional ‘Meditations from the Laundry Basket: Forty Reflections Illuminating Truth in Everyday Life’]
One of my kiddos was helping me set the table for dinner.
As she went to put ice in the glasses, I instructed, “Don’t put ice in Daddy’s glass yet.” It took her a second to realize what I’d requested; when she did, she was flabbergasted. Daddy always likes ice! Why would Mommy want to keep something good from him?
What I hadn’t told her yet was that Daddy had a work meeting this evening that was going to go through dinner. So if she put ice in his glass now, it would be completely melted by the time he came to eat.
She needed to trust my instruction rather than her understanding.
Sometimes, like this one I gave to my child, God’s instructions don’t make sense in the moment. His commands at times feel unloving. But it’s then that we need to trust our God who is love rather than relying on our own understanding. He does nothing maliciously, no matter how much it might baffle our reasoning. And the more we know this wholly good God we serve, the more we’ll grow in our trust of Him—even when we don’t quite understand.
One day we will understand. But for now it’s enough to know Him as He revealed Himself through His Word. The more we pursue and know Him, the more rest we will have in the unknowns.
Scripture to Ponder:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
PROVERBS 3:5–6
A Question to Ponder:
Are there any areas of my life I might be delaying
obedience because I don’t have full understanding?
